stripes on shibas?

My owners are wondering why I got these stripes on me, especially visible with my winter coat. Their previous shiba did not have them. They think I am part feline with these stripes. Huh?

  1. We have winter stripes here too. We've assumed they are the guard hair layer pushed out by luxurious inner fur---took a year to develop (he came from pound as a mature dog, was kind of scruffy when we got him.) So maybe there is an intermediate shiba between glossy and long-haired, or a spectrum, OR the weather?? We're northern and cold!

  2. My akita developed those, and both of my shibas. People commented on them all the time, and asked if they were a breed feature! I think your idea of the undercoat pushing out he guard hairs is a good one.

My dogs seemd to get tem later in life. But then, their coats got a bot longer then too.

  3. Our Ellie has them, at age 14 - and mainly on the side she doesn't always sleep on!

  4. My Shiba's turning 11 and just got his feline stripes (both sides) after shedding his winter coat this spring ^..^ A relief that some other Shibas have them too, he just went to the vet for his annual check-up and shots, and otherwise, seems perfectly fine.

  6. My 10 year old Shiba also just developed his own set of feline stripes. And winter shed is over for about a month now. Love my cat like shiba!

  7. Yup, just noticed them on my aging Shiba. She is 16.5 and I noticed this around 6 months ago. I think it is rather interesting. I'm trying to think of any dog that has stripes.
